ADVENTURE IN SURVEYING

My recent visit to Simara,Bhairawa and Nepalgunj airports.

Tuesday, July 31, 2013

July 30, 2013; we left Kathmandu with a team of 5 members led by Prem Sir to Simara Airport at around 8: 30 in the morning.  It was a sunny day with clear weather so road side view was fun to watch. We took the Dakshinkali route bypassing the holy temple of Kali mata on the way. We stopped at Deurali for a while where the atmosphere was so cool and relaxing with all the mist in the air. Then we took off with a pace on a bumpy road till Hetauda. We had our quick lunch at Hetauda Bazzar and continued our journey to Simara Airport. It took us around 8 hours to reach our destination. We were assigned a task to find the magnetic variation in airport’s runway section. After submitting the official letter from CAAN to the officials at the Simara airport, we were allowed for the entry to the airport’s runway in the evening time. So we got some time to find a hotel to stay and have some food. In the evening as scheduled we went to the airport for the survey. But we were accompanied by a slight rain and there we had some hiccups during the survey. Mr. Akkal Das Maharjan, an experienced surveyor was operating the Wild compass Theodolite T0 with me and my friend Suman helping him on the work. But we got into a serious problem when Maharjan sir detected some mechanical defects in the machine. We took some trail readings but they were unacceptable because the difference between the left face and right face reading was out of permissible range.  ..........contd
